Trade secrets involve information that can be used in the operation of a business that is sufficiently valuable and secret to afford an actual or potential economic advantage over competitors. Examples of trade secrets may include customer lists, manufacturing methods, computer software, methods of doing business and other confidential information.
State and federal laws protect a company’s secrets from theft or misuse, yet these laws may provide little protection unless appropriate steps are taken to safeguard these secrets.
